DOG TRAINING

Puppy Kidergarten & Puppy School

Puppies 8 to 12 weeks of age - Puppy Kindergarten.

Puppies 13 to 17 weeks of age - Puppy School.

Our Puppy Kidergarten is designed to cover the age of secondary socialisation which occurs from 6 - 12 weeks. During this time puppies learn to become familiar and comfortable in the domestic environment. Puppies during this period are more willing to approach a stranger or investigate unfamlliar objects. As this period of development comes to an end, strange objects and humans are more likely to induce fear. This is a natural development process of the survival instinct that occurs in many species.

Attending our Puppy Kindergarten is vaccinating your puppy against behavioural problems later in life. During our classes puppies will learn to interact with other breeds not just its own, they will learn to meet and greet strangers, hear some strange sounds and to investigate a range of objects that they will encounter during their lifetime with humans. We also cover correct handling showing you how to train your puppy to accept handing in a quite and calm manner and foundation training exercises such as puppy push ups, and many other important exercises. Our Kindergarten Class is held at the Mt.Helena Veterinary Clinic so that puppies will learn to associate fun with that strange smelling place and not be fearful of visiting when the not so nice things need to be done such as vaccinations. The owner can also learn about diet and health issues from the practice veterinarians. It is also a safe environment for the pups who have not yet reached their full course of vaccinations.

Puppy School is designed to provide for owners who have purchased an older puppy and are missing out on Puppy Kindergarten. Keeping older pups together allows for controlled play and interaction along with socialisation and training helps these owners to raising a sound, happy and reliable dog.

We will show you the best ways to teach desirable behaviour to your puppy by setting standards for a lifetime. During the classes you will learn how to build towards calm and controlled behaviour, the course will incorporate obedience training techniques and provide an opportunity for constructive interaction with practical purpose.

You will enjoy learning how to teach your puppy behaviours such as sitting when asked, lying down and coming when called, to stay calm while being handled. Throughout the course you will learn to recognise and prevent problems in behaviour before they get out of hand. Advice will be given on a wide range of topics such as what to do with your puppy when visitors call, travelling your pet, how chidlren should behave when in the company of puppies and adult dogs.  Puppy School is held at my private establishment enabling the use of space and equipment and again it is safe for pups who have not completed their full course of vaccinations. Having both indoor and outdoor facilities everyone is protected from the weather.

Both Puppy Kindergarten and Puppy School are limited to 6 handler/dogs so that everyone gets individual help and attention. The courses run weekly over 4 x one hourly lessons. Beyond Basic Training Class

For the owner and dog who have completed our other courses and who enjoys having fun while learning advanced skills.

Beyond basic training is just as it sounds a class where both dogs and their handlers enjoy learning lots of fun stuff as well as advanced obedience and off lead control. Training dogs takes commitment, patience and time but it should be fun, it should be stimulating, it should be relaxing and when it is it builds a strong bond between dogs and their handlers, increase good health and longevity for both.

Dogs are so smart and can learn so many skills and training them increases their enjoyment of life. Dogs were bred to work not to lead a life of boredom and most behavioural problems such as barking, escaping, shadow chasing, digging and destructive chewing stem from an under stimulated lifestyle. It's a proven fact that twenty minutes of stimulating and fun activity is equivalent to a two hour walk.

In this class handlers learn lots of training games, scent work, advanced obedience training such as drop on recall, retrieving, fantastic heelwork, reliable off lead control and tasks such as opening doors, finding the keys and to carry the peg basket!

As with all our classes numbers are limited to 8 handlers/dogs. We also provide notes and email support. This is an ongoing class and booked in monthly blocks of four one hour lessons.

Private Lessons

If you can't commit to one of our courses then consider private sessions which we can taylor to meet your needs. Maybe you have a rescue dog or an older dog that has not had any social interaction or formal training then it would be my recommendation to begin with a private lesson where I can work with you to develop a level of control and confidence.

Some dogs may not be suitable for group training due to aggression or fear and private lessons will enable you to get better control without the stress of other dogs and people.

Behavioural Consultations

If you have concerns about your dog's behavior such as:
• Aggression towards other dogs or humans
• Fears and Phobias
• House soiling
• Separation Anxiety

You can schedule a behavior consultation with me. This consultation usually lasts about two hours, during which I will evaluate your dog and take a detailed behavioral and health history. We discuss your concerns and determine realistic goals for a positive outcome. I will work with you to develop a training plan for you and your dog and give you the tools to get you started.

For more serious problems, treatment may involve some or all of the following:
• Follow up consults
• Private training
• Group lessons
• Veterinary treatment

You can contact me to discuss your needs or help you select the right course for you and your dog. Phone now for a no obligation quote on all our services.
